it's very much against the nature of humanities research to have an oh so very clear theoretical framework & timeline for the research over the next 4 years before you are admitted to a PhD program. What use to have a concrete and detailed plan that you will 100% abort later? All the AHRC awardees that I knew actually do things very different from what they listed in their research proposal. I do not trust the tenet of "testing your skills in mapping a doctoral scale project" and such. It's more bureaucracy than skill testing.
